Launch Monitor Technologies Explained

Compare radar and camera launch monitors for indoor golf by room depth, ball placement, handedness, data, and software compatibility.

Published

Choose a launch monitor by where it can observe the ball in your room and whether it supplies the feedback you need. Radar and camera systems have different placement tradeoffs. The exact monitor’s indoor instructions matter more than its technology label.

What the tracking methods see

Layout What the device observes Indoor planning question
Rear radar Motion near impact and during early ball flight Is there enough clear depth behind and ahead of the ball?
Floor camera Images near the ball and club at impact Can you keep the ball in the hitting zone, and does the unit move for different handedness?
Overhead camera Images from a fixed view over the hitting area Does the finished ceiling and mount allow the specified hitting zone?

For a concrete radar example, Garmin calls for the Approach R10 to sit 6–8 ft behind the ball indoors and for the ball to be at least 8 ft from the screen or net. For a floor camera example, the GC3/GC3S manual shows the hitting zone in which the ball needs to sit. A shorter tracking footprint still leaves the full swing and containment requirements to solve.

Compare the data you will actually use

For distance gapping, check ball speed, launch and carry. Ask which inputs are measured, which are estimated and whether spin needs marked balls in the relevant mode. For club delivery, check exactly which club metrics are available and whether stickers or a separate package are required.

Virtual carry and roll depend on the simulation settings. Keep conditions consistent when comparing sessions. A feature list with many metrics tells you little about whether they will be captured for the club, ball or drill you plan to use.

Check the model, license and connection together

Record the exact model, software edition, subscription and device connection. Verify it against both vendors’ documentation. Check whether switching from a vendor range app to third-party courses changes the software license, the host platform or the type of connection.

If multiple players share the room, sketch the left- and right-handed positions and trace the club path and device placement for each. Then check the room dimensions guide before committing to the tracking layout.
