Golf Simulator Room Dimensions: Plan Your Space

Measure usable width, depth, and height around the hitting position and check the full layout before ordering equipment.

Published

There is no universal room size for indoor golf. A workable layout must accommodate the players’ swings, contain shots and meet the requirements of the chosen monitor and display. Measure those needs from the same ball position rather than comparing room dimensions to a single rule of thumb.

Measure the playable space

  • Height: Measure upward from the top of the finished mat or stance platform. Record the underside of lights, beams, doors and projector mounts across the entire hitting area.
  • Width: Measure between the nearest obstructions at the stance and across the swing path. Check both hands if both will play. Moving the tee off-center can improve one side while taking space from the other.
  • Depth: Start with the rear-wall gap behind the screen, then measure screen to tee and tee to the rear obstruction. Include the monitor footprint, rear clearance and any separate walkway.

If several people will play, record the tallest golfer and longest intended club. A room sketch supports a physical clearance check with the bay empty and no ball in play. If clearance is uncertain, stop and adjust the layout or scope before attempting full swings.

Work an example from wall to wall

Suppose the usable depth is 18 ft. For illustration, reserve 1.5 ft behind the screen, place the ball 9 ft from the screen and reserve 1 ft at the back. That leaves 6.5 ft between the tee and the rear reserve. An extra foot of screen setback would reduce that to 5.5 ft if the ball remains 9 ft from the screen.

Garmin specifies 6–8 ft from the Approach R10 to the ball and at least 8 ft from the ball to the screen or net for its indoor setup. The example shows how a plausible total room depth can still fall short once the spaces are assigned. Use the chosen screen and monitor instructions, along with actual equipment footprints, for the final layout.

Mark the positions on the floor

Use tape to mark the screen face, frame corners, tee and equipment positions. Sketch the plane of an open door and any space needed for access or spectators. Verify the projected image dimensions against the screen’s usable area and confirm the lens has room at its intended position.

The room planner draws an initial layout using a stated screen setback and screen-to-ball assumption. Use it to see which measurements you need, then replace those assumptions with the chosen equipment’s requirements on your site sketch.
