Planning & Setup
Planning a Garage Golf Simulator
Plan a garage bay around door tracks, floor slope, vehicles, storage, and the choice between removable and permanent equipment.
A garage simulator has to work in two configurations if you still park or store gear there. Sketch the room as a golf bay and as a garage. Identify what moves, where it is stored and what must stay clear throughout a door cycle.
Map the door and overhead hardware
Measure from the finished hitting surface to the lowest rail, opener, handle or fixture around the swing. Mark where a sectional door travels and sits when open. Repeat the check for other equipment mounted overhead. If an enclosure or projector occupies the same path, choose a different layout or have the mounting conflict evaluated before drilling.
If a door position is essential to your layout, make the setup sequence explicit so another user can reproduce it. Keep emergency access and equipment service clear.
Measure slope at the tee
Garage floors can slope across a stance or along the target line. Use a straightedge and level over the proposed mat and monitor positions. Record where the mat edge would stand above the floor. If you build a platform, keep transitions stable and recalculate overhead clearance. Check the monitor instructions for placement relative to the hitting surface.
Choose how the bay resets
| Configuration | Good fit | Recheck each session |
|---|---|---|
| Portable mat and net | The parking bay needs to clear often | Containment placement, mat position and monitor alignment |
| Retractable or movable screen | You need most of the footprint back between sessions | Attachment points, deployed side coverage and clearance behind the screen |
| Fixed enclosure | Dedicated space is available | Condition of screen, padding and hardware |
Keep bikes, tools and vehicles outside the protected hitting area. Screen setback still applies when a vehicle or shelving sits behind the screen. Use the screen maker’s mounting and care guidance.
Plan power, light and storage together
Place the host device and cables outside traffic, swing and shot paths. Check how the door changes light on the screen and in the tracking area. Follow the environmental limits and storage instructions for your specific electronics, especially if the room is unconditioned.
Use the room planner for the basic footprint, then add door travel, parking and storage to a separate sketch. Photograph the marked golf configuration so equipment positions are easy to restore.
