DIY Golf Simulator vs. Complete Package
Decide between sourcing components and buying a package by comparing fit, support, exclusions, and total installed cost.
Choose DIY when you need to solve unusual room geometry or reuse equipment and can coordinate the pieces. A package can simplify sourcing and provide a single place to ask questions. Before paying for either, check the complete installed scope against the same room sketch and requirements.
Compare what each approach solves
| Decision | DIY | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Awkward room dimensions | Choose components around obstructions and exact mounting points | Request outside frame dimensions and fit guidance before ordering |
| Existing computer or projector | Reuse it if compatibility and geometry check out | Ask whether the bundle can exclude or swap that component |
| Setup time | More individual orders and integration decisions | Fewer sourcing decisions, with assembly and configuration still to confirm |
| Service and returns | Terms can differ by component and vendor | Confirm who handles fit issues, replacements and freight returns |
A manufacturer’s assembly guide can reveal work the box list leaves implicit. For example, the Foresight Birdie instructions separate enclosure assembly from component setup. Ask whether the quoted scope covers those steps, projector mounting and software activation.
Ask for an exact bill of materials
- Send the finished dimensions, obstructions, handedness and candidate tee position.
- Ask for the monitor, projector, screen, mat and computer model numbers.
- Confirm the assembled enclosure size and the amount of clear space required behind the screen.
- Ask what the software license covers after the initial term and who provides support if a connection fails.
- Get written costs for delivery, tax, installation and returns.
For DIY, make a second list of interfaces that someone still owns. Examples include mounting the projector at the required throw, transitioning floor height around the insert and routing video cable to the host.
Use the same acceptance checklist
Before purchase, agree on how you will judge completion. Check that the selected software works, the image fills the intended area, the monitor can read from the planned tee position, and the finished bay accommodates the intended players. Keep the model documentation and make calibration and support responsibilities explicit.
Compare proposals with the budget planner and include the value of install work where it differs. Keep a copy of each quote so later substitutions are easy to spot.
