The Beginner’s Guide to Golf Simulators
Understand how indoor golf works and choose between a launch monitor practice station, virtual courses, and a projected simulator bay.
A golf simulator turns a real shot into a virtual ball flight. A launch monitor observes the shot, software calculates what it would do over a full distance, and a phone, tablet, monitor or projector displays the result. If your goal is to see carry distances and dispersion, a monitor with a practice range can be enough.
How a shot becomes a simulation
- You hit from a mat into containment designed for the ball and club you plan to use.
- A launch monitor captures data near impact or during early flight. Which club and ball measurements it captures depends on the model and mode.
- Software converts those inputs into simulated carry, curvature and roll. The result can vary with software settings such as elevation, wind and ground conditions.
Pay attention to the difference between a value measured by the device and a value derived by software. If you want to use the setup for distance gapping, keep the balls and virtual conditions consistent across sessions.
Choose an experience to build around
| Goal | Start with | Additional dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Practice with shot feedback | Mat, containment and a monitor with range feedback | A display device only if the monitor needs one |
| Play virtual courses | Practice setup plus compatible course software | Supported device, license and connection |
| See the course at full scale | Course setup plus projection and impact screen | Lens position, screen clearance, mounting and cabling |
A side display can keep practice useful while you work out a permanent projection layout. If you expect to add a screen later, reserve the space behind it and consider where the future frame will sit.
Decide in this order
- List the players, handedness, longest club and desired activities.
- Measure the room around a candidate ball position.
- Compare tracking layouts against the same measured room. Check the model’s indoor instructions.
- Verify the app or course software works with the exact monitor and host device.
- Build a cost estimate that includes mounting, delivery and ongoing software.
If the longest club has uncertain clearance, decide whether a shorter-club practice station would still be worthwhile. A favorable hardware dimension alone says little about whether a particular golfer can swing in the finished bay.
Plan your first practice session
Once the installation is commissioned per the equipment instructions, start with one target and a consistent ball position. Use a small set of shots to check monitor alignment, shot capture, display visibility and where balls return after impact. Record misses or irregular readings before changing several variables at once. Those notes give you a baseline for later troubleshooting.
